Keep You Garage Secure

Your garage door can easily be broken into by savvy burglars with just a coat hanger and a small wood block. The safety release mechanism, meant to assist you in a power outage, is the culprit. It can be accessed from outside a roll-up style garage door simply by threading a coat hanger through the top of the door and fishing the release line through the opening. Once the burglar pulls the emergency release latch, your garage door can be rolled up by hand.

You can remove the handle to your emergency release latch making it more difficult to snag the line and pull it through the top of the door, but it is still possible. You can cut the emergency release line making it impossible to pull any of the line through, or you can completely remove the line.

Better yet, lock the release lever by using a zip-tie or thin wire to tie the lever to the carriage assembly it is attached to.

Another way is to create a shield or cover so the coat hanger cannot access the release.

These methods will still allow you to use your remote to open the garage door and in case it is necessary, you still have access to the emergency release from inside the garage.
